Description:
Active collab is an project management and collaboration tool. This tool comes as hosted solution by the vendor. The tool can also be installed on a local server or network. The tool has email alerts which can be configured to send out emails during any important activities that are logged using active collab. The API's provided with active collab can be used to integrate with popular applications like Bugzilla and SVN. The tool provide dashboard like interface that provides snapshot view of all the projects involved. The time logging feature is very easy to use and contains some basic predefined reports that can also be downloaded as .CVS files. The vendors have two price structures, one targetted towards corporates and the other towards SMB's. The corporate edition costs $499/ year while the SMB edition is priced at $299 a year.
Highlights:
| Pros | perpetual license for hosting on own server…so, only one time costs (and these too are quite less for the features it offers) & you can choose from corporate or small Biz license; access to full source code for tailoring; quickly move between projects; break a ticket into smaller tasks; unlimited attachments allowed; some great options for collaboration (emails, attach files, discussion forums, contextual attachments); flexibility with setting up a client for a project and also for setting up and controlling user permissions; time tracking and invoicing (with easy to use templates and several options); interfaces for mobiles and localization; printable reports; integration with SVN. And it has a very intuitive UI. |
| Cons | Not available as a hosted service; some additional extensions would be a great addon |
| Conclusion | You have to host it on your own server, so expect some hiccups there and you would have to do your own maintenance…would have been great if it was available as a hosted service. However, if that isn't a must have for you, you should just go ahead and get activecollab. I have heard people switch from other expensive and highly popular products to Activecollab without a problem. Time tracking and invoicing features are easy and they extend the use of activecollab for those who want to use it for customer/vendor billing too. |
