Basecamp is a web-based project management tool which comes with 4 different plans for you to choose from - Basic ($24/month), Plus ($49/month), Premium ($99/month) and Max ($199/month). Most functions are available in all plans and you also get unlimited users in each plan. However, the storage space and number of projects that can be managed is different across the plans. Also, note that time tracking function is not available under Basic plan. Basecamp allows you to create projects, add users, assign tasks, share files, get reports and track status. Multi-project dashboard, to-do lists, milestone reports, message boards, time-tracking, white boards, chat, RSS feeds and user-based permission setting are some of the important features available. Also, there are add-ons and extras that are available for integration with basecamp in order to provide additional functionality e.g. iPhone applications, mobile applications, reporting tools, financial tools, etc.

Pros
A simple project management tool that comes with a great user interface and collaboration tools. A lot of add-ons are available to provide supplemental functions that you might need e.g. interesting add-ons are available for reporting, accounting, invoicing, charts (including Gantt), reporting, iPhone etc. |

Cons
Limited features in the base version of the software. Yes, it does make the features available through add-ons but then that's an overhead for someone who just wants to get started quickly and not spend time configuring add-ons. Moreover, if you add the cost of add-ons, basecamp really gets pricey. |

Conclusion
I would call it more a collaboration tool than a project management software. Okay, if you add the extras and add-ons, it does become a good project management tool; but then you don't want to spend time, effort and money in getting and configuring all those add-ons. The other way of looking at it is -- the add-ons make it more modular so you can actually build your own customized PM tool. So, if you need to manage simple projects where collaboration is the key - you could go for base camp. And you could also go for basecamp if you have requirements for specific custom functions that you would want to pick and add from the available add-ons. It is not very suited for quick short term projects that also have heavy MIS needs. |
